Patna: Over 4 lakh voters' names have been deleted in Bihar ahead of the visit of an Election Commission team in view of assembly elections.

Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in October-November this year.

An EC team is set to visit the state on a two-day visit before the Holi festival next month. The team will hold meetings with district magistrates and senior officials of other agencies to assess the situation ahead of the assembly polls. Apart from Patna, the EC team is scheduled to visit Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur.

According to the state election office sources, names of 4,09,434 voters have been deleted due to various reasons. Out of which 2,37,967 are male voters,  1,71,421 are female voters and 46 are transgenders. On the other hand, 9,94,466 new voters have been included in the voters list.

The deletion of names of voters, particularly female ones in districts like Kishanganj, Araria, Nalanda and Madhubani may create controversy as opposition parties are gearing up to take up the issue during the EC visit. Sources said that the EC team would take stock of EVMs and VVPAT during their meeting with the officials concerned.

Sources said that the schedule of the election for the 243-member Bihar assembly may be announced in September and election may be held in November. Voting may take place after festivals like Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath.
