Bengaluru: Even while the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is contemplating to serve `Chicken Rice' meals to stray dogs in the city, a horrific incident where a 68-year-old man has been mauled to death has been reported.

The deceased has been identified as Seethappa, a resident of Telecom layout, Kodigehalli and he was on a morning walk when the incident took place.

On Monday morning, around 4 am, Seethappa had set out for a morning walk. Since it was cold, he had wrapped a blanket around him. A pack of around 8-10 dogs attacked him just outside the house and started mauling him.

The dogs had torn most of the meat from his legs and hands and also parts of his face. The family members of Seethappa and the neighbours rushed to his help, but the dogs started charging when the people went near. At last, when the dogs gave up, he was rushed to a hospital in Yalahanka, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The BBMP has announced a compensation of Rs one lakh to the family members of Seethappa. BBMP Special Commissioner Suralkar Vikas Kishore said that as per the provisions, the BBMP could announce only Rs one lakh compensation.

`CHICKEN MEALS: Earlier, the BBMP had come out with a plan to serve `Chicken Rice Meals' to over 5000 stray dogs in the city. The BBMP had even floated tenders to supply and distribute the meals to the stray dogs.

The BBMP was planning to spend over Rs 22 per meal and had floated tender for over Rs 2.2 crore per year. The idea was floated by some stray dog lovers, who had argued that the dogs were getting aggressive as they were not getting enough food.

However, the move faced severe criticism from all quarters and the proof that the dog population was growing due to haphazard disposal of waste from meat stalls and non vegetarian hotels was placed before the BBMP officials. The project is in limbo now.
