New Delhi: An Air India Toronto-Delhi flight was reportedly diverted to Frankfurt due to clogged lavatories on May 2. The flight AI188 had to be diverted as the toilets were unserviceable, reported PTI, citing sources.
However, when the news agency contacted the airline, its spokesperson claimed that the flight was diverted due to a technical glitch. The flight departed for Delhi after two hours.
"The flight resumed its journey to Delhi from Frankfurt after approximately two hours," stated the Air India representative as reported by The Times of India.
The flight was operated with a Boeing 7770-337 (ER) aircraft as per information available on the flight tracking website Flightradar24.com. The aircraft was 15.8 years old, according to information from the website Planespotters.net.
Meanwhile, Air India is reportedly facing such situations for long-distance flights due to its ageing fleet.
It is the second such incident in two months when an Air India flight was diverted due to blockages in the toilets.
On March 6, flight AI126 from Chicago to Delhi returned to the US city after being airborne for more than 10 hours due to the same issue. About an hour and forty-five minutes into the flight, the crew reported some of the lavatories in Business and Economy Class to be unserviceable.
A majority of the wide-body planes operating flights on the US and Canada routes are old, due to which the plumbing issues keep cropping up, reported PTI, citing a source.
