Goa: Goa is currently grappling with intense rainfall on Wednesday, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which had issued a warning for heavy to very heavy showers across the state. With the rain now pouring down heavily, waterlogging has been reported in several areas of the small state. The administration has issued an orange alert, urging both residents and tourists to remain cautious and prioritise their safety.
In response to the worsening weather conditions, Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane has announced a complete ban on access to Dudhsagar Waterfalls, other local waterfalls, forest areas and popular trekking routes. The decision has been made in light of potential hazards such as strong water currents, flash flooding and slippery terrains, which could put lives at risk.
“The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days. These conditions could quickly become dangerous. We request everyone to stay safe and avoid these areas until the weather stabilises,” Rane posted on social media. He further urged people to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow all safety advisories.
IMD Warns Of Gusty Winds & Heavy Downpours
The IMD has predicted that these pre-monsoon showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h, will persist over the next few days. Officials have reiterated the importance of adhering to IMD alerts and local instructions, warning against travel to remote or vulnerable areas during this time.
Authorities have advised the public to stay indoors as much as possible, particularly avoiding flood-prone zones and landslide-prone areas. The administration has also strongly discouraged trekking activities and visiting natural water bodies during this period of intense rainfall. In addition to safety on the ground, residents have been cautioned about potential disruptions to essential services, including transportation and electricity.
Tourists currently in Goa or planning visits have been asked to remain alert, avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, and stay in touch with local authorities for real-time updates. The state government and disaster response teams are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise due to the extreme weather.
