Muharram school holiday 2025: With the summer holidays over, schools across many parts of India begin their new academic session in July 2025. Most schools are likely to follow their regular routine, but some holidays can be taken based on local or national importance.
Muharram Holiday: On or around July 6 or 7
Muharram, the beginning of the Islamic New Year, is one of the important holidays in July. It is a gazetted holiday and generally celebrated by schools across the country. Muharram in 2025 will fall on Sunday, July 6. Depending on the sighting of the moon, however, the date might differ. If the moon is not sighted on July 5 evening, the holiday can be celebrated on Monday, July 7. Students and parents should check the final holiday date with their individual schools.
Rath Yatra on July 7: Closure of Regional Schools Possible
Rath Yatra, also taking place this year on July 7, is widely observed in states such as Odisha. The schools in those areas might not function on the festival day, but this will depend on local decisions.
Kanwar Yatra Could Affect School Timings in Some States
The Kanwar Yatra, usually held in the latter half of July, may result in school shutdowns in certain areas of northern India like Noida, Ghaziabad, and Haridwar. Schools in these affected regions have not been shut down officially, but they might get closed because of excessive traffic and people visiting. The local governments will decide on the matter nearer to the dates.
Sundays Are Regular Weekly Holidays
Besides these holidays, all Sundays throughout July — July 6, 13, 20, and 27 — will be a normal weekly holiday for schools nationwide.
Further closures can be announced on the basis of district festivals and local circumstances. Students and parents are advised to keep in contact with school officials and check official announcements from time to time for information.
