UP Heavy Rains School Closed: Heavy monsoon rains and rising river levels prompted the Prayagraj and Varanasi authorities to direct a total shutdown of schools from pre-primary to Class 12 on all boards and streams of education.
In Prayagraj, the District Magistrate declared the closure of all schools up to August 7, 2025, owing to stringent flood-like situations. The order applies to government, aided, CBSE, ICSE, and private schools in Hindi and English mediums. The order asks schools to carry out administrative tasks—like DBT and U‑DISE Plus—online.
Likewise, in Varanasi, schools will be closed on August 5 and 6, as flood waters of the Ganga cross danger levels. Swelling rivers have inundated localities and ghats and have caused disturbances in day-to-day life, leading to these precautions.

The Superintendent said in an official statement, "In view of the rain and flood situation in Varanasi district, in compliance with the instructions given by the District Magistrate, Varanasi, all the schools of all boards (Basic Education Council, Secondary Education Council, CBSE Board, ICSE Board and Sanskrit Board) running from pre-primary to class 12 in Varanasi district will remain closed on August 5 and 6. Therefore, the Headmasters / Principals of all the schools are directed to ensure strict compliance with the said order."
Lucknow Meteorological Department has put out a heavy rainfall warning up to August 6, and extensive waterlogging is likely to occur in several districts. As the emergency situation mounted, the government suspended boat services on the Ganga and deployed relief teams.
District administrations have set up relief camps and night shelters in Prayagraj and Varanasi, and the DM is making surprise visits to see that aid services are effective.
These school closures are precautionary and directed towards protecting students during worsening weather. Authorities warn people not to venture close to rivers and recommend adherence to safety measures.
