Mumbai: In a pioneering move that marks a significant leap in India’s technological and educational advancement, Maharashtra is set to establish the nation’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) University. The announcement came from Maharashtra’s Minister for Information Technology, Ashish Shelar, on the occasion of World Education Day.

About The Proposed AI University

The proposed AI University will serve as a cornerstone in the state’s efforts to align with India’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” mission and its ambition to become a $5 trillion economy. Minister Shelar declared this initiative to be “historic,” highlighting its potential to transform the educational and technological landscape of the country.

“This university will not just be an academic institution but a hub for cutting-edge research and skill development,” Shelar stated. “It will empower Indian youth to lead in the rapidly evolving, AI-driven global economy.”

The project will be executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education, under the leadership of Minister Chandrakantdada Patil. Shelar further emphasized that the initiative is part of the government’s election manifesto and a bold step towards preparing the workforce for industries dominated by AI, blockchain, quantum computing, cybersecurity, and digital innovation. “Our vision is to create a skilled workforce that can thrive in this technological revolution,” he added.

In addition to establishing the university, the state is preparing to unveil India’s first state-level Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Policy. A special task force, helmed by Minister Shelar, has been constituted to draft the policy. “This comprehensive policy will ensure that Maharashtra stays at the forefront of technological innovation and sets the standard for other states to follow,” Shelar said.

The AI University is expected to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration between academia and industry. It aims to position India as a global leader in AI, ensuring that the nation’s youth are equipped with future-ready skills.

During his speech, Shelar extended his greetings to students and emphasized the importance of technology in shaping education. “Our government is committed to leveraging technology to transform education, foster innovation, and create opportunities for growth,” he remarked.

PM Modi's Vision of Harnessing AI To Accelerate India's Progress

This development coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of harnessing Artificial Intelligence to accelerate India’s progress. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit in 2024, PM Modi noted, “This is the era of AI, and India is powered by two AIs—Artificial Intelligence and Aspirational India. Together, they will accelerate our growth and position us as a ray of hope in a world grappling with challenges.”

As the AI University takes shape, Maharashtra’s bold vision reflects its dedication to empowering future generations and creating a skilled workforce capable of leading in a technology-driven world. By combining education and innovation, the state aims to unlock new opportunities and pave the way for India’s rise as a global AI hub. This initiative underscores the critical role technology will play in driving India’s aspirations and economic growth in the decades to come.
