The Maharashtra government on Friday assured swift implementation of the ambitious 'DAKSH' project (Development Under Applied Knowledge and Skills for Human Development in Maharashtra) with financial support from the World Bank. The initiative aims to enhance the state’s Skill Development Department and create a globally competitive workforce by introducing skill development programs aligned with industry needs.

The project will integrate various state entities, including the Maharashtra State Innovation Society, State Skill Development Society, and the Directorate of Vocational Education and Training, ensuring a unified approach to skill development. Minister of Skill Development, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, emphasised the project’s focus on empowering women and marginalised communities while fostering innovation and excellence.

The announcement came during a high-level meeting at Mantralaya, chaired by Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik. Representatives from the World Bank, including Pradyumna Bhattacharya, Team Leader for India, and Denis Nikolov, Senior Education Specialist, lauded the initiative’s vision to prepare the workforce for global challenges.

“This project is not just about skill development but about creating a workforce that can thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy,” said a senior official in the Skill Development Ministry involved in the project. “With the backing of the World Bank, we are confident this initiative will set a benchmark in human capital development.”

During the meeting, discussions were also held on establishing a Global Skills Center and an Innovation City in line with the vision of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Decisions related to updating the department's website, approving an immediate workforce of 45 for the DAKSH Implementation Unit, and ensuring coordination among all departments for the project's successful implementation were also deliberated.

Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik reiterated the government’s commitment to fast-tracking decisions and coordinating efforts across departments to ensure the project's success. World Bank representatives expressed confidence that the DAKSH project would serve as a model for skill development across the country, benefiting individuals from all sections of society.
