Delhi: The National Capital of India continues to experience relief from the scorching heat as the rainy spell persists. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for moderate rainfall, which is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
The minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be around 23 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Celsius, respectively. The wind is expected to blow steadily at 30-40 kmph.
Why is Delhi experiencing rainfall?
According to the IMD, Delhi is experiencing rainfall due to a combination of factors, including the movement of a western disturbance, the convergence of moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, and potentially the influence of a strengthened subtropical westerly jet stream. These weather systems are bringing moisture and cooler temperatures to Delhi and leading to unseasonal rainfall.
Residents experienced rainfall on May 2
Residents of Delhi experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds on Friday, May 2, 2025. The moderate rainfall leads to waterlogging at several locations and flight disruption at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. There has been an increase in the frequency of Western Disturbances this year, which could be due to a rise in global temperatures.
IMD issued a Yellow Alert
According to the weather department, moderate rainfall is predicted in the city and its surrounding areas. The IMD issued a yellow alert in the city for rain, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, and strong surface winds. The weather department said that rainfall is expected to occur in the city till May 10, 2025.
The IMD has dismissed the possibility of heatwave conditions this week, predicting that the maximum temperature will stay between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius. This suggests a prolonged relief from the heat.
