New Delhi: Indian Railways has deactivated over 2.5 crore suspicious IRCTC user IDs after detecting unusual booking patterns. The move aims to ensure transparency in ticket booking and curb misuse by agents and fake users.

If you use IRCTC to book train tickets, this update is crucial. Indian Railways has deactivated over 2.5 crore user IDs found to be suspicious or fake. This action follows advanced data analytics that revealed abnormal ticket booking patterns.

The confirmation came from the government in response to a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP A.D. Singh. He had sought answers regarding quick ticket sell-outs, deactivation of user IDs, and irregularities in the booking process.

Data Analytics Reveals Booking Fraud

According to the Ministry of Railways, the deactivated IDs were either fake or created using questionable details. Analytics showed these users had nearly identical booking behaviour, indicating they were not genuine passengers. The aim is to stop misuse and bring transparency to the booking process.

Ticket Demand Varies Seasonally

Railways clarified that ticket demand fluctuates throughout the year. Popular trains or routes with shorter travel times often see rapid ticket sales, while others may have availability. The deactivation ensures that honest passengers aren't at a disadvantage due to misuse by bots or agents.

Aadhaar Now Mandatory for Tatkal Booking

Starting 1 July 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets via the IRCTC website or app. Additionally, agents will not be permitted to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes after the booking window opens.

Digital Payments and Emergency Quota Reforms

To boost transparency, digital payment options have been made available at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Furthermore, the rules for Emergency Quota booking have changed. Previously, passengers had to apply on the day of travel. Now, applications must be submitted one day in advance. This quota is reserved for MPs, senior officials, medical emergencies, and senior citizens.
