Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The PHQ has instructed the district superintendent of police and the commissioners of police of Bhopal and Indore to run a drive against vehicles violating the norms by unauthorised use of hooters, flashing lights, VIP stickers and incorrect number plates, said officials here on Wednesday.

Recently, during routine checks, the police found a vehicle that was using unauthorised hooters, flashing lights and VIP stickers. The former Chief Minister, Digvijaya Singh, has also written a letter to the DGP, demanding that action be taken against such vehicles violating the norms.

The AIG of the Police Training and Research Centre, Tushar Kant Vidyarthi, has asked the SPs to note that vehicles using red, yellow and blue flashing lights are being left without any action. This is motivating other vehicle users. It is the need of the hour to take action against such vehicles. The AIG has asked the SPs to send the action-taken report by 18 March to the office.

The Act

Under the Motor Vehicle Act 1989, only police vehicles, the fire brigade and ambulances are permitted to use hooters. On other vehicles, hooters are not permitted. If any person installs hooters on vehicles without eligibility, then a challan should be issued against such vehicles and they should be seized.

The Central Government has issued a notification that does not allow even VIPs to install hooters and sirens on their vehicles. Following the government's decision, hooters were removed from all VIP vehicles.
