15 students fell sick after food poisoning, rushed to a nearby hospital

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): About 40 students of BE-I fell ill in MANIT, Bhopal, complaining of food poisoning. They were admitted to Sharda Hospital in Aradhna Nagar (Nehru Nagar) on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

However, MANIT administration said only 15 students fell sick after food poisoning and they have been hospitalised. The administration assured of for proper probe in food poisoning incident.

According to students, 40 students of H-4 hostel fell ill. Their health deteriorated after lunch on Saturday. MANIT administration admitted all the students complaining of vomiting and stomach ache to hospitals. They were served aloo-paratha and in lunch they were given aloo sabzi.

Students suspects that potatoes may be the cause for the food poisoning as in summer, their quality deteriorates due to heat, which can cause physiological defects, rotting, and other quality issues.

Dr Umesh Sharda, MD, Sharda Hospital, Aradhna Nagar, said, “Twenty MANIT students were brought here for treatment. They had developed food poisoning on Saturday evening. They are undergoing treatment. They will be discharged by Monday and they are improving. Food poisoning results from eating contaminated, spoiled or toxic food. The most common symptoms of food poisoning are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.”

MANIT public relations officer Rahul Tiwari said, “About 15 students complained of stomach ache. Our resident doctors gave them medication, a few students went to hospitals for further treatment. MANIT administration is making investigation about the fault in students’ mess.”

Mess inspected

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) team inspected MANIT mess after students complained of food poisoning. The team has collected food samples to investigate the causes. In all, six samples were taken and sent for testing. They found rice loose, tuar dal loose, flour, gram flour, cooked sabzi, cooked rice loose in kitchen.
