Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): After strong monsoon rains in June and July, the weather in Madhya Pradesh has now calmed down.

Since the start of August, there has only been light rain across the state. The weather department says that no strong weather system is active at the moment, so heavy rain is not expected until August 9.

People in Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and other districts may see light rain with thunder, but most areas will have clear skies and sunshine—especially around Raksha Bandhan.

This may lead to a rise in daytime heat, with temperatures crossing 35°C in many cities.

Rainfall so far...

Madhya Pradesh has received 28.7 inches of rain so far this monsoon, which is 44% more than the normal average. This covers about 77% of the seasonal rainfall target. The eastern parts of the state have seen heavier rains compared to the west.

According to weather expert Dr. Divya E. Surendran, heavy rain may return in the second week of August. She said that once it starts, the state is likely to complete its rainfall quota for the season. Areas like Jabalpur, Rewa, Shahdol, and Sagar divisions have received 48% extra rainfall, while Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Chambal, and Narmadapuram divisions got 39% more rain than usual.

Last week, some areas in the state faced flood-like situations due to continuous rain, especially in eastern Madhya Pradesh. In Raisen, the Betwa river overflowed, flooding farms, temples, and roads. Though rain has stopped now, rivers like the Narmada are still flowing high, and dams are full, with gates being opened for water release. In nearby Uttar Pradesh, the Yamuna river caused flooding in Chitrakoot.

Here are the districts with the most rainfall this season:

Guna: 45.8 inches

Niwari: 45.1 inches

Mandla and Tikamgarh: 44 inches

Ashoknagar: around 42 inches
