Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): In a tragic twist, the Jabalpur police revealed that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College’s first-year student Shivansh Gupta (19) took the extreme step of suicide due to one-sided love.
Initially, the reason was suspected to be ragging, however all the findings of police investigations indicate emotional distress linked to unrequited love.
Family demands CBI inquiry
On June 5, Shivansh died after jumping from the fourth floor of his college hostel, a height of 35 feet. The college had initially stated that he was suffering from depression, while his family strongly suspected foul play and demanded a CBI inquiry.
According to recent findings by Jabalpur’s Gwarighat police, Shivansh was emotionally attached to a classmate and wanted to take her out on a ride on his new bike. The two had even made plans to meet, but at the last moment, the girl went out with someone else. This incident is believed to have deeply affected Shivansh emotionally.
Shivansh texted the girl
Police said that Shivansh had sent a message to the girl shortly before his death, in which he wrote, “What I’m about to do, you should never do.” Moments later, he jumped from the hostel building. Despite being admitted to the ICU, he could not survive.
Shivansh’s parents still believe that this was not suicide, but part of a conspiracy. His father, Santosh Gupta, questioned the suicide theory, saying, “Why would a boy who scored 660 in NEET and had just bought a new bike suddenly end his life?”
He also pointed out that the language used in the message didn’t seem like something Shivansh would write. His mother, Archana Gupta, agreed, saying that although her son was upset over the bike issue, he was not depressed. She believes something happened in the hostel that night which is still being hidden.
‘Senior were jealous of him’
The family also mentioned that some senior students were jealous of Shivansh’s bike. He had even told his mother about being troubled by a few students, but the family thought it was just minor ragging. Now, the college has formed an internal committee to look into the matter, and police have started questioning the girl involved.
According to CSP Gwarighat HR Pandey, the investigation has confirmed the emotional relationship so far. With this all angles - including ragging, messages, emotional stress, phone records, and CCTV footage - are being thoroughly examined.
This incident raises deeper concerns not only about Shivansh’s untimely death but also about larger issues in medical college campuses - such as ragging, emotional pressure from relationships, and institutional responsibility.
