Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A major tragedy was averted in Jabalpur on Monday afternoon after an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Jabalpur landed safely at Dumna Airport after facing technical issues.
Fortunately, the problem was reported before taking off which prevented all possible mishaps.
According to information, the pilot discovered a fault in one of the rear tires of the aircraft while conducting a routine check before take-off around 12:10 pm.
After landing, the aircraft was parked while undergoing standard inspections when the faulty tire was noticed. The pilot immediately informed IndiGo’s Delhi headquarters about the issue.
Jabalpur-Mumbai return flight cancelled
As a precaution, the Jabalpur-Mumbai return flight was cancelled. A replacement tire was sent in from Delhi on another flight and arrived in Jabalpur at around 3:15 pm. The faulty tire was then replaced with the new one.
Airport authorities clarified that this was a routine technical issue and not an emergency landing, as some people had assumed.
“The aircraft had a damaged tire, which prevented it from taking off again. We have rescheduled the Jabalpur-Mumbai flight for around 5:30 pm,” he said.
About 50 passengers who were supposed to fly from Jabalpur to Mumbai were either sent via connecting flights to Delhi and Bengaluru or were scheduled to fly later in the evening.
Aircraft tires are built to endure around 500 take-offs and landings. After that, they can be ‘retreaded’ - a process where the tire's surface is renewed. This process can be done multiple times, allowing a single tire to be reused up to 3,500 times.
