Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Communal tension flared up in Gorghi village under Gudh police station of Rewa district on Saturday after unidentified miscreants vandalised the centuries-old mazar of Ghazi Miyan on Friday night.

The miscreants also hoisted a religious flag on the shrine. The site is located just 200 metres from a temple, where people from both communities frequently gather.

The incident came to light on Saturday afternoon when Muslims noticed the damage and gathered in large numbers, forcing police to rush to the spot. Heavy police force was deployed in a one kilometre area around the shrine to prevent any untoward incident.

DSP Himali Pathak and SDM Gudh Anurag Tiwari also reached the spot. They appealed for peace and assured strict action against the culprits. Police had registered an FIR against unidentified persons and formed teams to trace them, officials said.

Authorities also started the reconstruction of the damaged mazar to pacify the agitated people. City Qazi Mufti Mohammad Mubarak Azhari termed it the first such incident in Rewa and alleged it was a conspiracy to disturb communal harmony. He demanded impartial investigation and strict punishment to those responsible.

Additional police forces have been deployed from Rewa city and patrolling has been intensified. Officials confirmed that the situation was now under control and both communities had agreed to maintain peace. The DSP said that the shrine was being restored to its original form and the situation was fully under control.
