Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A chlorine gas leak was reported from Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal on Wednesday afternoon. The incident caused panic as people in and around the premises complained of eye irritation and breathing difficulties.

The incident occurred around 3:30 pm at a factory on JK Road in Govindpura Industrial Area.

The chlorine gas began leaking from a chemical store and spread outside.

As soon as informed, officials including Govindpura SDM Ravish Kumar Srivastava, SDRF teams, municipal fire brigades, police, and the power company, rushed to the spot.

The leak was brought under control within an hour by neutralizing the gas with caustic soda.

During the leak, workers and nearby residents experienced tearing eyes and breathing problems. Officials wore masks while handling the situation.

According to information, the leak was triggered when water entered the chemical store, causing chlorine gas to escape. Although the quantity was not large, fire brigades sprayed water to prevent any fire risk - which, in turn, spread the gas further.

District Collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh has ordered the CMHO, municipal corporation, and industries department to investigate the incident together and submit a report within two days. SDM Srivastava said that strict action will be taken against those responsible.
