Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): A few women allegedly tried to smuggle drugs to their inmate brothers serving sentences at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Central Jail in Jabalpur, as the Raksha Bandhan ’gift’. All of them were caught during the strict checking at the jail campus.
According to information, the incident occurred during the special open meeting at Jabalpur Jail for the festival. As women were allowed inside to tie Rakhi to their brothers, they allegedly brought intoxicating substances along with them.
First case
The jail authorities informed that a sister tried to deliver drugs to her brother by hiding them inside a talisman (amulet) supposedly meant for her nephew.
The plan got uncovered when security personnel noticed that the amulet was larger than usual size. Their suspicion proved correct upon inspection, which revealed concealed drugs.
Second case
In another incident on the same day, a woman was caught trying to sneak marijuana into the prison by hiding it inside a baby’s diaper. The guards discovered the stash during a routine check of visitors and their belongings.
Smuggling attempts foiled, no action taken
Although the smuggling attempts were foiled, no formal legal action was taken against the women due to the festive occasion.
Instead, the jail management issued strict warnings and let them go. Officials, however, stressed that security would be tightened in future, also during festivals, to prevent such cases.
Jail authorities have reiterated that while Raksha Bandhan is a time to celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters, the misuse of this goodwill for illegal activities will not be tolerated.
