BHOPAL: Patients infected with tuberculosis (TB patients), despite their lung infection, are safe from coronavirus as well as black fungus infection. None of the TB patients was reported afflicted with coronavirus or black fungus infection.

As per health care professionals, TB patients are not administered steroid†dose†which is given for corona patients. Secondly, TB patients are given a lot of medicines and injections against lung infection. However, they said that it is just an observation and not proven evidence.

TB Hospital medical superintendent Dr AK Jain said, "TB patients are not getting infected with neither corona nor black fungus. It may be due to the fact that they are being given medicines and injections against tuberculosis. Despite low immunity, they are safe from corona and even black fungus because they are not given steroids."

Dr Lokendra Dave, HoD pulmonary medicines, GMC, said, "It is just an observation and not full proof evidence that TB patients are not getting corona and infections. We have also observed that TB patients are safe from corona and black fungus infection. TB patients develop cell-made immunity and they are safe from both the†infections. However, they are given a lot of medicine and injections against tuberculosis."

ENT Dr SP Dubey, member of the task force constituted by the state government, said, "We have observed that no TB patient came with an infection of black fungus. It is true that they also have lung infection which is not caused by the coronavirus. I had done a lot of operations (surgeries) but none of them was a TB patient."
