Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Of more than 1,024 vehicle washing centres in the city, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has failed to act against over 1000 illegal vehicle washing centres operating in the city.
According to BMC officials, only 126 washing centres have the licence to operate. The rest continue to function without permission, contributing to severe water pollution,
Sources say that an investigation into unauthorised washing centres was launched in April in all the 21 municipal zones. However, not a single zone submitted a list of such centres, citing delays due to Swachh Survekshan-2024 team's visit. Even after nearly two months, there has been no progress in the investigation or any crackdown by BMC
The unauthorised vehicle washing centres are located in Sant Hirdaramnagar, MP Nagar, Nehru Nagar, from along Narmadapuram Road to Kolar and older parts of the city.
Areas like MP Nagar alone have more than 15 centres. Vehicles are washed from early morning till late at night, often without adherence to environmental guidelines. A recent inspection highlighted that cover 90% of these centres flout pollution control norms.
While the BMC Initially showed intent to take strict action, it held back the drive. With rainy season approaching concerns are mounting over worsening drainage and increased pollution risks.
The criterion
According to pollution control regulations, the washing centres operating within authorised automobile workshops are eligible for licences. With barely 10% of the centres meeting the criterion, the rest remain illegal
Oil-laced water
Oil released during vehicle washing is a major concern. This oil-laced wastewater flows directly into the city's drainage system, mixing with mud and causing severe blockages. During recent pre-monsoon drain cleaning, municipal officials observed that many drains were clogged due to oil deposits from nearby washing centres.
Additional municipal commissioner, Devendra Singh Chauhan said “The permission is granted by BMC water works department. If any of these centres are found violating pollution control norms, action will be taken.”
