Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Dr. Ujjawala Khurana recently delivered a lecture titled 'Evaluation of Fine Needle Aspiration in the Molecular Diagnostics of Tuberculous Lymphadenitis' in Italy at the International Congress.

The event was organised by the International Academy of Cytology — a globally respected institution dedicated to the advancement of cytological sciences.

Her lecture was part of the 'Head and Neck, Infectious Diseases' session, which was chaired by two distinguished experts in the field: Ms. Immacolata Cozzolino and Dr. Zubair Baloch. Dr. Khurana’s presentation highlighted the critical role of fine needle aspiration (FNA) in the molecular diagnosis of tuberculous lymphadenitis, showcasing its relevance and application in modern clinical practice.

Dr. Ujjawal Khurana (Additional Professor, Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine) addressed the 22nd International Congress of Cytology 2025, held at Fortezza Da Basso, Florence, Italy.

She elaborated on how the team successfully extracted DNA from archival Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) smears, quantitatively analyzed the DNA, and conducted nucleic acid amplification using hsp65 and IS6110 primers.

The findings of the study demonstrated promising comparability with CBNAAT results obtained from fresh aspirates, highlighting the potential of archival cytology smears in molecular diagnostics of tuberculosis.

AIIMS director Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh said: “This achievement by Dr. Ujjawal Khurana and the research team underscores AIIMS Bhopal’s commitment to high-impact research and global academic engagement. Presenting our work at such a prestigious international forum reflects the quality of innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration our institution fosters.”
