Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Gastro-surgeon Dr Abhijeet Deshmukh said that people have to regulate their lifestyle, otherwise a topsy-turvy lifestyle leads to many gastric problems. Yoga with light gym exercises is suggested for youth to stay fit. Lukewarm water should be taken in the morning after getting up to streamline the digestive system. Free Press talks to Dr Abhijeet Deshmukh on various health issues. Excerpts:

What about stomach cancer? What are preventive measures?

Around 80% of stomach or gastric cancer cases are preventive and 20% are genetic. By regulating lifestyle and diet, people can prevent cancer to a great extent. Initial symptoms are loss of appetite, weight loss and irregular stool.

People should be very cautious about these symptoms. People need to focus on lifestyle choices that minimise risk factors. This includes maintaining a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight and engaging in regular physical activity.

Gall bladder stone cases are on the rise. What are your observations over the years?

Currently, I perform surgery on 2–3 gall bladder stone cases daily. Earlier, hardly one or two cases were reported 20 years ago. This is a drastic change in society with reference to gastroenteritis issues. If a doctor has suggested surgery, the patient should not delay it—otherwise it leads to many complications. In fact, nowadays technology is advanced, so detection is much easier, which is also why more cases are being found. Actually, people after 40 years of age should undergo sonography for early detection of gall bladder stones. It should not be avoided.

Acidity problem is common. What are preventive measures for other gastric problems?

“Hurry-Worry-Curry” should be avoided. People should chew food properly. They should not be in tension or depression. And finally, they should avoid spicy food. Acid reflux, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), and stomach flu are diseases caused due to acidity. Seven out of ten patients are detected with gastric problems. One should take at least six hours of sound sleep. In corporate working culture, youth working in night shifts should ensure they get proper sleep during the day.

Uncontrolled protein intake has become part of lifestyle, specially among young generation.

Packet proteins are not good for health after gym exercise. Instead of taking such proteins, people have better options like eggs, paneer, pulses, etc. Even excess exercise is not advisable. Regularity and consistency are a must for body exercise.

Fatty liver cases are also on the rise. Any preventive measures?

It can lead to cancer and hepatitis if fatty liver is not controlled. Key points include achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and engaging in regular physical activity. Moreover, it’s crucial to limit or avoid alcohol consumption, manage underlying health conditions like diabetes and hypertension and avoid smoking.
