OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform services have now been restored after it faced a significant service disruption early Tuesday morning, affecting a wide range of users around the world. The issue began around 6:00 am IST, with users reporting difficulty logging in, submitting prompts, and accessing various features on both the web and mobile platforms.
By 8:00 am IST, the outage had escalated, with many users turning to platforms like Downdetector and social media platform X to report problems. Many experienced error messages when attempting to use the chatbot, while others were unable to access the service entirely. The disruption affected the ChatGPT website, mobile apps on iOS and Android, and related services.
According to OpenAI’s official status page, the problem extended across 23 different components. These included core functions such as login, search, conversations, GPTs, and file uploads, as well as more advanced tools like DALL-E, GPT Vision, advanced data analysis, image generation, voice mode, and memory features. Services tied to ChatGPT’s broader ecosystem, including Sora, Codex, context connectors, 1-800-CHAT-GPT, and the desktop apps for macOS and Windows, were also impacted.
OpenAI acknowledged the disruption and confirmed that issues were related to ChatGPT’s Record mode, Sora, and Codex capabilities. The company actively updated its system status page as engineers worked to resolve the problem.
At 9:24 am IST, OpenAI reported that all affected services had fully recovered. The platform resumed normal functionality across all devices and services. OpenAI also announced that a detailed Root Cause Analysis (RCA) would be shared within five business days to explain the nature of the outage.
While OpenAI did not provide specific user numbers, the widespread reporting and engagement on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) highlighted the scale of the disruption.
