Cricket Australia has responded to legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar's disappointment over not being invited to present the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. According to an NDTV report, Cricket Australia spokesperson said, "We acknowledge it would have been preferable if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been asked to go on stage,"
According to the report, Cricket Australia clarified that Gavaskar had been informed he would present the trophy to Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah if India retained it. However, with Australia winning the series and reclaiming the trophy after a decade, Allan Border was invited to present it to Australian captain Pat Cummins.
What did Gavaskar say in his statement ?
Gavaskar voiced his feelings, saying, "I would have loved to be there for the presentation. It's the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, representing both Australia and India. Just because I’m Indian shouldn’t matter. Australia played better and deserved the win. I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border."
He added, "I was told just before the Test started that was going to be the situation. If India didn't win or draw the series I wouldn't be required...I'm not feeling sad, but I'm just feeling a little perplexed. It's the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, both of us should have been there.”
WTC points table after Australia's 3-1 win over India
