Lewis Hamilton has wiped his Instagram slate clean unfollowing everyone, including his new team Ferrari and even his beloved dog Roscoe. The unexpected social media move comes on the eve of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and has left fans puzzled, especially since the seven-time world champion is set to race in Ferrari red at Imola for the very first time.

This isn’t an entirely new pattern for Hamilton. After the dramatic and controversial end to the 2021 season where he lost the title to Max Verstappen in Abu Dhabi Hamilton vanished from social media for months. He eventually returned with a renewed online presence, but the motivation behind his latest Instagram purge remains unclear.

Hamilton has previously spoken openly about his complicated relationship with social media. In a candid moment during the 2023 Brazilian Grand Prix, he revealed ongoing struggles with anxiety linked to online platforms and explained how therapy and other mental health practices have helped him cope.

“You don’t see me on social media a lot because I deal with certain anxieties,” Hamilton had said. “I’ve had to build my resilience by exploring therapy, meditation, reading, and other tools to navigate the pressures I face.”

Lewis Hamilton's tough start at Ferrari

Hamilton’s start to life with Ferrari has been anything but smooth. Apart from a sprint race victory in Shanghai, the British driver has been unable to challenge for top spots in the main Grands Prix. His best finish so far came in Bahrain, where he placed fifth. Most recently, he finished eighth in Miami after a scrappy contest with teammate Charles Leclerc.

Currently sitting seventh in the drivers’ standings, Hamilton is trailing Leclerc by 12 points. To add to the irony, his replacement at Mercedes, rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, is positioned ahead of him in the 2025 championship table.

Hamilton’s last Grand Prix victory came under unusual circumstances in Belgium last year, when Mercedes teammate George Russell was disqualified post-race. Prior to that, he broke a long winless streak with an emotional triumph at Silverstone. Despite flashes of brilliance, the early Ferrari chapter of Hamilton’s story has yet to meet expectations.
