With the crucial IPL 2025 clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) under serious threat of being washed out due to heavy rain forecasts in Mumbai, DC co-owner Parth Jindal has called on the IPL authorities to shift the high-stakes fixture to another venue.

In an email sent to the IPL, which has been accessed by ESPNcricinfo, Jindal urged the league to act preemptively and shift the match out of Mumbai, citing the IMD’s yellow alert and a consistently grim weather forecast. He highlighted that the potential washout had been anticipated for nearly a week.

Jindal’s plea comes shortly after the IPL announced the relocation of the May 23 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to Lucknow, citing similar weather concerns in Bengaluru.

The match, scheduled for Wednesday night at Wankhede Stadium, carries major playoff implications. A win for MI would seal their spot in the playoffs, while a victory for DC would leave both teams’ fates hinging on their final group-stage fixtures, both of which are against Punjab Kings (PBKS). However, a washout would see both teams split points putting MI on 15 and DC on 14 and dramatically altering the playoff race.

The development comes after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore also expressed dissatisfaction over the implementation timing of the IPL’s revised rain rule, which now allows for an additional 120 minutes to complete rain-affected matches. KKR were eliminated after their match against RCB on May 17 was abandoned before this rule was activated.

Playoff scenario if MI vs DC match gets abondend

Scenario 1: Delhi Capitals Qualification chances

If MI vs DC is abandoned and each team gets one point, Delhi moves to 14 points, and MI to 15. Delhi can then qualify by Beating Punjab Kings in their final game and hope that Mumbai loses to Punjab Kings in their final game. This would leave Delhi at 16 points and MI stuck at 15, enough for DC to sneak into the top four.

Scenario 2: Mumbai Indians Qualification chances

Even with a washout, Mumbai maintains the upper hand and has two routes to the playoffs. Firstly, MI must defeat Punjab Kings in their final league game, helping them move to 17 points, enough to seal qualification regardless of other results. The second option is that if MI loses to PBKS, they can still qualify if Delhi also loses to PBKS, leaving MI ahead on 15 points versus DC's 14.
