Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have issued an official statement addressing the signing of South African batter Dewald Brevis during IPL 2025. Ashwin claimed that the youngster was paid a bigger amount on his demand. CSK broke their silence and issued a formal statement, maintaining that the entire process was fully compliant with IPL rules.

CSK's statement on Dewald Brevis

CSK in its statement said, “Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL,” the franchise said.

They further referred to a specific IPL regulation to back their claim—clause 6.6 under ‘Replacement Players’, which states:“A replacement Player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable Player for the relevant Season.”

The statement also noted:

“If a Replacement Player is recruited during a Season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the Franchisee’s matches during the relevant Season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the Player Contract.”

How did Dewald Brevis do in IPL 2025?

Brevis, who had gone unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction despite setting his base price at ₹75 lakh, was later signed by CSK as a replacement for injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh. Interestingly, Brevis ended up receiving the same amount ₹2.20 crore that Gurjapneet was bought for at the auction.

In IPL 2025, Brevis made a notable impact for CSK despite the team having a forgettable season. The Chennai-based franchise finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time in its history, but Brevis’ arrival offered a glimpse of hope and a fresh dimension to their batting lineup. Before joining CSK, Brevis had previously played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
