Diogo Jota's wife Rute Cardoso and the rest of his family members were seen arriving at the hometown chapel for his and Andre Silva's funeral in Porto, Portugal. In a video surfaced on social media, Jota's wife was looking hugely emotional as she hugged seemingly a fellow family member before stepping inside the chapel.

Jota's former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, manager Arne Slot and the existing players of the club, including Virgil Van Dijk and Andy Robertson were earlier seen making their way to the funeral. Van Djik, who is serving as the skipper of Liverpool currently, was seen carrying a wreath with Jota's jersey number of 20. Ruben Neves, who cried inconsolably before the Club World Cup 2025 match against Fluminense, has also made an appearance.

Jota had notably married Rute Cordoso only 10 days before his death, which occurred on July 3, 2025 due in a car accident. The 28-year-old's last-ever Instagram post was also of a montage of his wedding with Cordoso and had captioned it, "A day we will never forget."

"The essence of what a Liverpool player should be" - Arne Slot

In his tribute statement for Jota, Slot said he has been left in complete shock and that his commitment towards the game and club was there for everyone to see. Slot stated, as quoted by independent.co.uk:

"For us as a club, the sense of shock is absolute. Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us. He was a teammate, a colleague, a workmate and in all of those roles he was very special. I could say so much about what he brought to our team but the truth is everyone who watched Diogo play could see it. Hard work, desire, commitment, great quality, goals. The essence of what a Liverpool player should be."
