In a shocking incident that has taken place in Pune district, a newborn was stuffed in plastic container and thrown in the garbage in Daund city, causing a stir in the area on Tuesday.

Earlier, it was reported that 10 to 12 newborns were thrown in the containers, but the Daund Police have now clarified that only one newborn was found in one container, while the other plastic containers contained biomedical waste.

Speaking to Free Press Journal, Bapurao Dadas, Deputy Superintendent of Police, said, “At around 9:30 am this morning, we got to know about the incident from the local residents. The newborn and body parts were packed inside a jar and found dumped near a canal at Jijamata Nagar in Boravake Nagar."

He informed that there is only a male fetus, and the other 10 containers had body parts, including some intestines, cancerous tissues, and other biomedical waste.

"Other body parts are from patients suffering from serious diseases like breast cancer. It looks like the tissue was removed, and the body parts were kept in the containers. Several recovered body parts have been examined by the medical authorities. The only fetus recovered from the spot has been sent for post-mortem. Once we get the report, we will proceed with the case accordingly," Dadas said.

"We are investigating whether this was the murder of a child, whether it was abandoned, or if it is just some medical waste. If it is a dead baby, it will be treated as biomedical waste. However, it is part of the investigation to confirm whether it is biomedical waste or not. Once we get the post-mortem report and other medical reports, we will begin investigating who left it at the spot. If it is confirmed that the fetus died due to injuries, we will proceed accordingly," he added.

There are a few registered hospitals in Daund where practitioners who work as gynecologists and handle deliveries and surgeries related to body parts operate. All such hospitals are being investigated.

"Currently, there are 7-8 hospitals we are looking into for investigation. At this moment, it is a case of negligent conduct with respect to the disposal of biomedical waste and the detention of the fetus. We are looking into whether it is part of another crime," he said in conclusion.

Police have registered the case under sections 88 and 90 of BNS and said that after receiving the
