Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Thursday presented the 'Pune Police Annual Crime Report 2024'. He offered a detailed comparison of crime statistics, covering murders, rapes, cheating and more, over the last few years. He spoke about the measures Pune Police took in 2024 to combat crime in the city and also unveiled the vision for 2025.
As per the data shared by the CP, 2024 saw a decline in the cases of murder and attempt to murder. 93 cases of murder were registered in 2024, whereas 101 murders took place in 2023, which is a 9 per cent decline. Attempt-to-murder cases saw a fall of 24 per cent as 186 cases were lodged in 2024, whereas 2023 saw 244.
Crimes like cheating, rape and molestation saw a rise in 2024, as per the data. 2021 cheating cases were registered in 2024, whereas 2023 witnessed only 1108. These cases included cyber crimes, economic offences, land grabbing, etc.
Kumar said there was an increase in cases of rape and molestation "due to prompt and free registration of offences relating to women". 505 cases of rape and 864 of molestation were registered in 2024, whereas in 2023 there were 410 cases of rape and 775 of molestation. For the safety of women, he said a toll-free helpline '1091' has been started. After calling the number, a beat marshal and a damini marshal of the nearest police station reach the spot immediately and resolve the issue, he said. There is also a WhatsApp number '8975953100' on which women can send their complaints, he added.
Talking about the maintenance of law and order in 2024, the CP said the Pune Police successfully conducted bandobast for the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls. Apart from this, bandobasts for Ganeshotsav, Palakhi and various other festivals were also successful, he added. "There was no communal or caste violence reported in the year 2024," he further said.Ku

The Commissioner also presented the vision for 2025. "We endeavour to reduce murders up to less than 75, improve women's safety in the city, reduce street crimes, capacity building of the Cyber Police Station, improve visible policing and improved response of Dial 112 emergency system," the CP said. "We will also be amping up the use of technology in policing. 2,800 CCTV will go live soon. Safety nets will be installed at all ghat areas. Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) will be operational," he added.
Kumar also mentioned that the Pune Police is working on a 'Zero tolerance and transparent work' policy. A list of habitual criminals has been prepared and those with more than two cases will face consequences, he said. Speaking about some prominent cases of 2024, Kumar said, "In the Porsche hit-and-run case, all ten accused have been arrested and are in jail for the last eight months. No bail has been granted to them. We have submitted a strong chargesheet against them in the court for strict action. Similarly, in other cases like the Andekar murder, the Bopdev Ghat rape case and the Satish Wagh murder case, strong chargesheets have been submitted in the court."
The CP also spoke about traffic management and said a total of 367 spots have been identified that are regularly congested. Out of them, major spots like University Chowk, Solapur Road, Nagar Road, Tadigutta – ABC Farm, Katraj Chowk and Navale Bridge are showing improvement, he said.
