World Environment Day 2025: NMMC Launches ‘Plastic And E-Waste Recyclothon’ To Transform Navi Mumbai Into Plastic-Free City

The initiative, titled ‘Navi Mumbai Plastic and E-Waste Recyclothon,’ was inaugurated at the NMMC headquarters under the guidance of Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde. Navi Mumbai: The initiative, titled ‘Navi Mumbai Plastic and E-Waste Recyclothon,’ was inaugurated at the NMMC headquarters under the guidance of Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde. This campaign, launched in collaboration with Project Mumbai, aims to create a plastic-free city in alignment with the global World Environment Day theme, “Elimination of Plastic Pollution.”

As part of the campaign’s first phase, over 200 plastic collection boxes will be placed at schools, markets, malls, hotels, and residential societies to gather plastic waste. The collected plastic will be recycled into useful items such as benches and pens, which will be used in public spaces to promote sustainability.

Dr. Shinde emphasized the importance of reducing plastic consumption alongside tree planting to lower the city’s carbon footprint. He also announced a ban on single-use plastics within NMMC offices and encouraged other offices to follow suit. Officials, employees, and citizens participated in the “My Earth, My Responsibility” pledge to avoid disposable plastics.

Students from Children’s Academy, Malad, were felicitated for creating decorative models made from recycled plastic bottles and thermocol. Their eco-friendly creations were recognized with pens produced from recycled plastic.

The event was attended by senior NMMC officials and representatives from Project Mumbai, including Dharmaraj Solanki, who expressed confidence in the success of the initiative. Commissioner Dr. Shinde said, "I urge the citizens of Navi Mumbai to actively engage with the campaign to help transform the city into a plastic-free environment."
