Mumbai: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) marked the World Environment Day by announcing a significant milestone of succeeding in a complete shift to green electricity in FY 2024-25. It also announced achievements including energy-efficient infrastructure upgrades and biodiversity efforts through native tree plantation.
On the eve of World Environment Day, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the operator of CSMIA, announced key environmental achievements. It claimed that CSMIA has entirely switched to green sources in FY 2024-25 for its electricity consumption needs, thus reducing Scope 2 carbon emissions by 100%.
The airport has also worked on energy efficiency through smart infrastructure upgrades like replacing 40 air handling unit (AHU) fans with efficient Electronically Commutated (EC) technology and deployment of IoT-enabled building management systems across terminals and parking facilities.
Moreover, it also claimed to have planted around 2,000 native trees using the Miyawaki method, contributing to local ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestration.
The airport also took steps towards comprehensive environmental management through advanced recycling infrastructure including Reverse Vending Machines at Terminal 2.
Similarly, organic waste composters that convert biodegradable waste into landscaping compost have been installed. In addition, Reverse osmosis (RO) plants treat wastewater for reuse in cooling systems.
The airport operator also carries out real-time monitoring of air quality PM10, PM2.5, and other pollutants near Runway 09. Additionally, it also tracks noise pollution through a network of noise monitoring stations, which inform operational adjustments to reduce community impact.
