Mumbai: To curb illegal sand mining and transportation in Maharashtra, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced in the state assembly that the Revenue and Police Departments will now take joint and stringent action against offenders.
Addressing the House, Minister Bawankule said, “Henceforth, the Revenue and Police Departments will jointly take strict action against illegal sand mining and transportation. Vehicles involved will not only face fines but also criminal charges.”
Under the new government resolution (GR), both departments will have independent authority to act against violators. Bawankule explained that earlier, vehicles caught transporting illegal sand were only fined and released by the Revenue Department.
"Now, if the Revenue Department seizes a vehicle, the Police will also initiate action, and vice versa. This means offenders will face penalties from both departments along with criminal proceedings,” he said.
The joint GR, issued by the Revenue and Home Departments, is aimed at tightening the legal framework around sand mafias, ensuring stricter enforcement and transparency in tackling illegal activities related to sand mining, usage, and transport.
“This government resolution will be made publicly available and implemented immediately. No leniency will be shown to those involved in sand mafia operations. Transparent and strict action will ensure justice for the common people and protect the environment,” Bawankule asserted.
