A 35-year-old woman was brutally murdered by an unidentified person who slit her throat using a sharp cutter for unknown reasons in Kalwa on Saturday morning.

The incident came to light when a labourer found the woman lying in a pool of blood on the first floor of an under-construction building and informed the site contractor. The deceased has been identified as Shanti Suresh Chavan (35), a labourer who lived with her husband and three children in Samrat Ashok Nagar, Kalwa East.

The incident reportedly occurred between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM at the construction site located at Sahyadri Chowk, Kalwa. Police suspect the accused lured the woman to the site under the pretext of cleaning work and then slit her throat, inflicting multiple injuries with a sharp cutter before fleeing.

The alert labourer informed the contractor, who then notified the police and rushed her to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. A post-mortem was conducted, and her body was handed over to the family on Sunday for the final rites.

Senior Police Inspector Ashok Utekar from Kalwa Police Station said, “We rushed to the spot and found her unconscious, lying in a pool of blood. We immediately called an ambulance and sent her to the hospital. She was later identified after her photo was circulated among local daily wage labour groups. We have formed two teams—one is collecting CCTV footage and technical evidence, while the other is working with informants and questioning several people. We have not ruled out the possibility of sexual assault.”

An FIR has been registered against unidentified persons under charges of murder. Further investigation is underway.
