Government Railway Police (GRP) seized over 20 kilograms of ganja from two individuals at Kalyan Railway Station on Thursday evening. The contraband, valued at over ₹5.18 lakh, was intercepted during routine patrolling aimed at curbing narcotics smuggling via the rail network.
Suspicious Passengers Intercepted
According to GRP officials, the seizure was made around 4:30 pm on Platform No. 6, shortly after the arrival of Train No. 12880 Bhubaneswar–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Superfast Express on August 8. Acting on suspicion, a GRP anti-narcotics team stopped and searched two men who had just disembarked from the train.
Accused Identified
The accused were identified as Akmal Khan Mohammad Yameen Khan (30), a resident of Shilphata, Mumbra, Thane, and Abid Majid Shaikh (23), a resident of Khardari Gaon, Mumbra, Thane. Upon inspection of their luggage, police recovered 20.685 kilograms of ganja, a substance banned under Maharashtra state law.

The operation was carried out under the directives of M.K. The drive was overseen by Pragya Zedge, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Region, Railways, Mumbai.

A case has been registered at Kalyan Railway Police Station under Sections 8(c), 20(b)(ii)(C), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, along with Section 3(5) of the Maharashtra Police Act, 2023. Both suspects have been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway.
Senior Police Inspector Pandhari Kande of Kalyan Railway Police confirmed that the local crime branch has sought further action in the case.
