Thane: KDMC Sanitation Workers Call Out For Strike After New Contractor Lays Off 750 Employees

Mumbai: The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)sanitation workers initiated a strike after the new contractor, awarded the solid waste management contract, abruptly cut the number of contract workers by 750. Ultimately, the firm Sumit Encloplast Private Limited conceded and assured that all employees would be hired in stages starting August 15. The contract workers voiced their contentment that their positions were secured.

Previously, the Secure One company handled cleaning and garbage collection in the KDMC area. This task has now been transferred to the new contractor, Sumit Encloplast Private Limited. A total of 1250 employees were engaged in cleaning tasks.

Nonetheless, the newly hired contractor company employed just 500 workers. There was a contest for the remaining 750 employees. As a result, the frustrated employees began a strike outside the Khambalpada vehicle depot earlier today.

The employees encountered Shiv Sena district leader Dipesh Mhatre and conveyed the unfair treatment they were experiencing. Following that, Dipesh Mhatre promptly headed to the Khambalpada depot with Shiv Sena party associates.

They kept KDMC Deputy Commissioner Prasad Borkar and Anant Joshi, the head of Sumit Enclave's management, along with Abhishek Burashe, at a distance. Ultimately, the contracting firm pledged to employ the remaining 750 workers starting August 15. The protest was called off only after this.

Municipal Deputy Commissioner Borkar cautioned that there will be consequences if the contracting firm requests payment for employing workers. He also guaranteed the Shiv Sena delegation that steps will be taken to settle the salary arrears from the former contractor at the earliest opportunity. Dipesh Mhatre cautioned that there would be significant protest if the welfare of the workers is compromised in the future.
