A 35-year-old woman from Kalundre village in Panvel taluka died by suicide after allegedly facing sustained mental and physical abuse from her husband. The incident occurred in the early hours of July 21, and Panvel City Police have since registered a case of abetment to suicide against the husband, Nainit Mhatre.
Victim Faced Years of Assault and Neglect After Husband Turned to Alcohol
The deceased, identified as Namrata Nainit Mhatre, was reportedly subjected to repeated physical assault, verbal abuse, and neglect by her husband, who had become addicted to alcohol. The couple had been married since 2011 and initially had a stable relationship, but matters worsened after Nainit began drinking heavily and eventually stopped contributing financially to the household, said a police officer.
The Father Stopped Supporting Family Financially
According to police, Namrata struggled to manage rent, household expenses, and her children’s education. She reportedly relied on financial help from her father and tried to make ends meet despite the abuse. Nainit allegedly spent his salary on alcohol, quit his job, and began physically abusing Namrata in front of their children, often causing scenes at home and insulting neighbors and landlords.
On the night before her death, Namrata had spoken to her father over the phone and enquired about his health. The call was cut short when Nainit returned home drunk. A few hours later, she was found hanging in her home, having used a saree to end her life.
