Navi Mumbai Tragedy: 50-Year-Old Father Of Alleged Drug Cartel Kingpin Dies By Suicide, Leaves Note Criticising NCB And ANU Investigations Into Sons' Involvement

Navi Mumbai: Father of the alleged kingpin of a drug trade cartel that is being operated from abroad, shot himself on Friday morning at his office in Kille Gaothan in Belapur.

The 50-year-old man, Gurunath Chichkar left a note behind about his frustration with the investigating agencies that had been summoning him after his elder son, Naveen was found to be involved in drug cases. Chichkar, used a 9mm pistol to shoot himself at around 7 am on Friday at the ground floor of his building which he used as his office.

“By around 9 am, his nephew informed the police. The building where he stayed was behind NRI police station area and while he stayed at the fourth floor, the ground floor was converted into his officer. The 9mm pistols do not have license and we are investigating from where he got the pistol which he used to kill himself,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (crime branch) Ajay Landge said.

According to sources in Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), a Red Corner Notice was issued around 15 days ago against Naveen. Naveen, who had studied in London, is said to be on run and wanted by NCB in the drug cartel case running into hundreds of crores. Recently, Anti Narcotic Unit (ANU) of Navi Mumbai found his younger son Dheeraj too involved in drug syndicate.

“Both the son have been on run and the father is called upon by investigating agencies for interrogation and information on their sons,” a police officer said. In the hand-written suicide note addressed to his mother, he mentioned that he was fed up of answering the NCB and ANU for these cases.

In a three paged letter that he typed addressing for NCB, he mentioned his struggles of how he reached Mumbai and how he turned into a builder with hardwork and it was around five years back for the first time that he learnt that his elder son was involved in drug cartel which broke him completely.

He said that when his younger son too was named, it was unbearable for him and he sweared in the letter that he, his wife and his younger son had nothing to do with the drug cartels.

He also mentioned that there were men claiming to be from influential backgrounds acting as agents who often approached him demanding Rs 10 crore to settle all the cases against his sons. He further mentioned in his letter that if he would have had any such illegal money with him, he would have settled the cases but he had none.

An accidental death report has been filed at NRI Coastal police station and the further investigations are on.
