A 16-year-old boy, Arav Srivastava, who suffered severe burns after coming into contact with an overhead wire atop a railway wagon, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning during treatment at a hospital. Arav had been receiving care at the National Burns Hospital in Airoli.

"He was semi comatose and in ventilator. He suffered major 3rd degree burns with early onset of sepsis and succumbed on Saturday morning," Dr Sunil Keswani from National Burns Hospital, said.

Arav, a resident of Belapur, was a Class 11 Science student at DPS School, Seawoods. The incident occurred last Sunday during a megablock on the Harbour railway line when maintenance work was underway. A garbage transport train was stationary between Nerul and Juinagar stations. Arav, along with his other friends, had gone to the site and he climbed on the train.

"Though earlier it was said that the boys were making reels, in the investigation we found that the boy had climbed out of curiosity to see how the train looks from above," senior police inspector Kiran Undre from Vashi GRP said.

He was critically burnt and also fell from the train, sustaining severe head injuries. Arav was initially admitted to a hospital in Nerul, and later shifted to the Burns Hospital in Airoli for specialized treatment. Despite five days of intensive care, he passed away on Saturday morning, confirmed Undre.
