Mumbai: Outsmarting the gutkha peddlers and following a hot pursuit, the Mumbai police have seized contraband worth Rs 6 lakh, which was being smuggled in a truck transporting cattle, and arrested the cleaner.

The vehicle, which had a concealed upper deck, was intercepted near the Dahisar check post on Thursday. However, the driver sped off, triggering a high-speed chase. The police succeeded in stopping the truck in Borivali, but the driver managed to flee.

While the lower deck carried livestock to deceive authorities, a massive stash of gutkha packets was hidden in the upper compartment.

The cleaner revealed the truck was coming from Gujarat and the receiver of livestock has produced receipts for the cattle purchase, said the police. The latter is under lens, they added.
