Mumbai: The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions announced the launch of a new digital platform where educational institutions run by minority groups will be registered.

The announcement was made by Shahid Akhter, officiating chairman of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions at a workshop in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The workshop on "Empowering Minority Education: Minorities Rights under Article 30' was held at Anjuman-I-Islam's Saif Tyabji auditorium, Byculla.

The event was attended by representatives from the Commission, Maharashtra government officials, and representatives from 400 minority-run institutions.

"There is a need at the district level for regular dialogue regarding the role and importance of minority institutions and their rights under Article 30," said Akhter who was the chief guest at the function.

The programme was presided over by Dr Zahir Kazi, president, Anjuman-l-Islam. Also present was Aanchal Goyal, Collector of Mumbai.

The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions Bill, 2004, was passed by the houses of Parliament and received the assent of the President. The NCMEI was established after the passing of the law. Article 30(1) of the Constitution of India provides for linguistic and religious minorities a fundamental right to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice.

The Commission is a quasi judicial body and has been endowed with the powers of a Civil Court for the purpose of discharging its functions under the law The commission has three main roles namely adjudicatory, advisory and recommendatory.
