Mumbai News: MMRDA To Open SCLR Extension And Final Kalanagar Flyover Arm On August 14

After years of anticipation, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to open two key infrastructure links the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension and the final arm of the Kalanagar Flyover on August 14. As per sources, the proposal for the inauguration has been sent to the Chief Minister’s Office, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expected to preside over the ceremony.

Boost to Connectivity and Traffic Relief

The opening will significantly improve connectivity between the Western and Eastern Express Highways, while also easing congestion for motorists travelling between Kurla, the airport, and the Bandra–Worli Sea Link.

Asia’s First Cable-Stayed Bridge of Its Kind

Under the SCLR extension project, a 215-metre-long cable-stayed bridge has been built on the Western Express Highway. With a width varying from 10.5 metres to 17.2 metres, it accommodates a two-lane carriageway. Notably, this is Asia’s first cable-stayed bridge of its kind.

Missing Link Now Complete

While several segments of the SCLR and its extensions are already operational, the final phase connecting directly to the Western Express Highway has been the missing link. At present, motorists heading from Chembur or the Bandra Kurla Complex towards the western suburbs must exit the SCLR at the Hans Bhugra Marg–WEH signal, navigate through the congested Vakola junction, and then proceed further.

Seamless Northbound Access

The new northbound arm, passing over the WEH, will bypass these choke points, offering seamless access to the highway. The alignment being opened now spans 1.9 km, completing the 5.4 km extension — 3.4 km of which was opened earlier.

Kalanagar Flyover’s Final Arm to Open

Alongside, the MMRDA will also open the third and final arm of the Kalanagar Flyover, linking the Sion–Dharavi Link Road directly to the Bandra–Worli Sea Link. Conceived to ease the notorious traffic snarls at Kalanagar Junction, the project involved building three arms, two of which are already in use.

Expected Benefits for Commuters

With both links becoming operational, commuters are expected to save significant travel time and experience smoother journeys across some of Mumbai’s busiest corridors.
