Mumbai: An elderly person became a victim of a cyber romance scam and lost close to ₹9 crore over 21 months due to “four women.” Cyber police have filed an FIR and will look into whether the suspects were distinct individuals or one person using several phone numbers.

The 80-year-old complainant resides in central Mumbai with his son and daughter-in-law. In April 2023, the complainant forwarded a friend request to a woman named Sharvi on Facebook. The pair were unfamiliar with one another, and she declined his proposal.

According to a report by TOI, a few days later, Sharvi sent him a friendship request again, which he accepted. The two began talking online and eventually swapped WhatsApp numbers. Sharvi mentioned that she had parted ways with her husband and resided with her children in Tardeo. She slowly began to ask him for money, asserting that her kids were ill. The complainant provided her money. After a while, another woman named Kavita contacted the complainant via WhatsApp.

She asserted that she was Sharvi’s sibling and mentioned that Sharvi had died. Dinaz informed him that Sharvi hoped he would cover her hospital expenses before her passing. Dinaz posted screenshots of a WhatsApp chat between her and Sharvi prior to her passing. In a brief moment, Dinaz declared her affection for him and showed a desire to marry. She also received money from him.

Another woman named Jasmine contacted us, stating that she was a friend of Dinaz. She asked him for assistance and persuaded him that Dinaz was eager to give back his money.

The complainant also compensated Jasmine. Upon exhausting his funds, he requested ₹5 lakh from his son. His son inquired about what was happening. Once he finished his story, his son informed him that he had been deceived. The elderly person fell unwell and required hospitalization
