A tragic case of alleged domestic abuse and dowry harassment has come to light in the Sakinaka area, where a 23-year-old woman, Mamta Kushwaha, died by suicide. Based on a complaint by her family, the police have booked her husband, Rajesh Maurya (32), for abetment to suicide.

The incident took place on June 28 when Kushwaha was found hanging at her residence. According to the police, her brother stated in his complaint that Maurya had informed them he had slapped her following a heated argument between her and his mother.

This was Kushwaha’s second marriage; her first marriage reportedly ended due to cruelty and domestic disputes. Maurya, employed as a driver, allegedly subjected her to repeated financial and emotional abuse.

The FIR states that Kushwaha's family gave furniture and five tolas of gold as part of the marriage arrangements. Additionally, they gifted Maurya a gold chain, gold ring, and ₹4 lakh in cash. Later, Maurya reportedly took ₹5 lakh from his father-in-law under the pretext of buying a house.

Although Maurya registered the house in Kushwaha’s name, he allegedly took a bank loan in her name and pressured her to arrange for EMI payments from her father. Her father, unable to meet his financial demands, had explained his helplessness.

Kushwaha often confided in her family about being beaten and harassed for money. Her father’s worst fears were confirmed on June 28 when the police called to inform him of her death. The investigation is underway to uncover further details.
