Mumbai: The state government has approved the distribution of two kits containing essential items and safety equipment to over 41 lakh construction workers in Maharashtra.
About The Essential Kit
The essential kit will consist of 10 items, and the safety kit will contain 13 items for construction labourers. The Maharashtra Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board will undertake the task of distributing the kits. Started in 2017, the distribution of such kits, more or less, attracted political dividends for the ruling dispensations.
Barely a few days before the state assembly elections held in October last year, the target of distribution of the kits, containing household items, was increased to over nine lakh, and safety kits to six lakh. According to the government resolution (GR) issued on Wednesday, the safety kit will contain 13 items such as – Safety Harness, Shoes, Ear Plugs, Masks, Reflective Jackets, Helmet, Safety Gloves, Safety Goggles, Mosquito Net, Water Bottle, Steel Tiffin Box, Solar Torch and Travel Kit Bag.

The essential kit will contain 10 items – Galvanised Trunk, Plastic Mat, Grain Storage Containers with the capacity of 22 and 25 KG, Bedsheet, Quilt, Chaddar, two small containers for sugar and tea and a water purifier (18 Ltr). The kits distributed before the state assembly elections had 7 to 8 items, and the board spent approximately Rs 4000 each for a kit.
Now, since the items have been increased and the number of beneficiaries, too, has been added, the cost of each kit may be doubled, said an official involved in the process.
