Sawan, also known as Shravan, is a holy month in the Hindu calendar. This auspicious month is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The month of Sawan falls between July and August and holds deep historical and religious importance in Hinduism.

The celebration of Sawan month is dedicated to Lord Shiva, where devotees perform several rituals to seek blessings from the god. One of the important days during this pure month is Monday, called the Sawan Somwar. Here's everything you need to know about this auspicious month.

Why is Sawan dedicated to Lord Shiva?

According to legends, during the Samudra Manthan (the cosmic churning), a powerful poison called Halahala emerged along with other divine items. Neither the gods nor the demons want to consume the poison. Lord Shiva knew that the poison was capable of destroying the universe. To protect the universe from Halahala, Lord Shiva consumed the poison.

Then, Goddess Parvati held his neck to prevent poison from spreading. The Goddess managed to stop the poison from spreading, but the poison caused a burning sensation in Lord Shiva's throat, turning it blue, and that is why Lord Shiva is also known as Neelkanth. The month of Swan is dedicated to Lord Shiva in remembrance of this event. On this day, Devotees offer water (Jal) to Lord Shiva, observe fasts, and offer prayers.

When will Sawan begin in North India?

In states such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar, the month of Sawan will start from Friday, July 11, 2025, and it will end on August 9, 2025. Sawan is observed on different dates across regions due to the variations in the lunar calendar system used.

When will Sawan begin in South India?

In states like Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, the Amanta lunar calendar is followed. In South India, Sawan will be observed from July 25, 2025, and it will conclude on August 23, 2025.

About the Purnimantha and Amanta cycle

Swan is followed by the Purnimantha cycle and the Purnimantha cycle. Purnimantha cycle considers full moon to mark the beginning of the lunar month, and the Amanta cycle considers new moon to mark the beginning of the lunar month in the Hindu Calendar. In North India, the Purnimanta cycle is followed, and the Amanta cycle is followed in the southern states of India.
