Khachrod (Madhya Pradesh): People in Khachrod are angry with smart meters installed by the electricity department and have started "Meter Satyagraha" movement on Wednesday as their electricity bills have become much higher than normal.
Consumers say their bills are now two to three times since smart meters were installed, even though they use the same amount of electricity. This has hurt lower-middle and middle-class families who cannot afford such high bills.
A group of people met electricity officer Sanjay Malviya to share their problems. They also gave a complaint letter to city officer Neha Sahu. Through the letter they asked for a technical check of smart meters, clear billing methods and stop collecting extra money until the problem is fixed.
Dr Ajay Vaktaria, who leads the movement, said this fight is about people's rights and honesty in government services. He warned that if nothing is done soon, the protest will spread to other districts.
Many citizens, businessmen and young people joined the peaceful protest. Social groups and local leaders are watching this movement closely, and it may spread to other parts of the state, said Vaktaria.
