Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The proposed Ujjain airport will be developed on the lines of Rewa and Datia airports, with operations planned to begin by Simhastha.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the Madhya Pradesh government are expected to sign an agreement within the next two weeks, paving the way for project rollout.

In its first phase, the airport will have a 2,600-meter runway—suitable for 72-seater aircraft—and will feature modern amenities such as a night landing system and a passenger terminal. In the second phase, the runway will be expanded to 4,000 meters, making it compatible with all types of commercial aircraft, similar to the airports in Indore and Bhopal.

Earlier, the state government had rejected AAI’s initial proposal, citing concerns. A revised draft was submitted just two days ago, addressing the objections. The aviation department has confirmed that signing of the short agreement is imminent.

In the first phase, the airport will support smaller, regional aircraft. The 2,600-meter runway will accommodate 72-seater planes, with all basic aviation facilities in place. The second phase will extend the runway to 4,000 meters, making it suitable for large jets and international connectivity.

There is currently no government land available around the Ujjain airstrip. The only option is to acquire private land. The Ujjain Collector has been assigned the task of identifying approximately 150 acres needed in addition to the existing 100 acres.

Short agreement soon: ACS

Additional Chief Secretary for Aviation Sanjay Shukla told Free Press that the revised proposal has been received from AAI and a short agreement will be signed shortly, initiating groundwork for the project.

Search for land begins

Aviation department officials said that around 250 acres are needed to fully develop the airport. With only 100 acres currently available at the site, the Ujjain Collector has been instructed to locate the remaining land, which will have to come from private owners.

Once developed, Ujjain will become the ninth airport in Madhya Pradesh, boosting tourism and aiding Mahakal temple pilgrims.
