Indore's MGM Medical College Plans To Transform Historic KEM School Building Into Museum | Tarun Tiwari

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College has proposed transforming the historic King Edward Medical (KEM) School building into a museum to preserve its legacy and offer students and doctors insights into its rich history.

A detailed proposal worth Rs 3.21 crore has been submitted to the government and will be reviewed in the college’s executive committee meetings.

College authorities said that they have taken the decision to address concerns about the building's current state and to control the gatherings of youth and issues like alcoholism due to a lack of security. The initiative follows repeated demands from the doctors' association for the building’s renovation, which has caused protests and agitations over the years.

In 2023, a plan to convert the KEM School building into a library and café for medical students was proposed but it couldn’t see the light of the day. Earlier, there were also plans by the tourism department to develop the site but it was also put under the cold bag.

Historic and Architectural Significance

Established in 1848, the KEM School, built in the French Gothic style, holds historical importance and is referred to as 'Hogwarts' by the city’s youth. MGM Medical College itself came into existence in 1953, nearly a century later.

"A proposal of Rs 3.21 crore has been sent to the government. This will be discussed in the upcoming EC meetings. Securing the right status for the KEM School building is our priority."
