Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a proud moment for Indore, city resident Amarjit Singh Gill has made history by becoming the first Indorean ever elected as a Member of Parliament in a foreign country. Gill secured victory in Canada’s general elections, winning from the Brampton West constituency in Toronto on a Conservative Party ticket.

He triumphed in a closely contested battle against Canada’s outgoing Health Minister, Kamal (of British origin), defeating her by a margin of around 1,400 votes.

A resident of Vishnupuri, Indore, Gill is an alumnus of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV). He completed his schooling at Vaishnav School and pursued his MBA (part-time, 1995–1998) from the Institute of Management Studies (IMS).

Recalling his former classmate, IMS Director Prof. Deepak Shrivastava said, “Gill always displayed leadership qualities during his college days. It’s a proud moment for the country, and especially for Indore and DAVV, that one of our own has been elected to the Canadian Parliament.”

Gill’s father served in the Indian Army, and Gill himself moved to Canada in 1999, where he eventually settled and entered public service.
